Finalists of new Crystal Cabin Award category announced

Airbus and Diehl in Hamburg nominated in "Best Customer Journey Experience" category

Two Hamburg-based companies are among three finalists of the special Crystal Cabin Award category Best Customer Journey Experience. The “Connected Experience” app by Airbus, a voice-controlled lavatory by Diehl and a light-based data transfer for Air France with “LiFi Power” by Latécoère are now vying for the coveted trophy. The new category focuses on products that enrich and enhance the passenger experience with hardware or software solutions throughout the entire journey – from planning and booking to beginning the journey, on-board products and the arrival time on landing. The awards will be presented on September 9, 2019 as part of the APEX Awards at the APEX EXPO and Aircraft Interiors Expo Americas trade fairs in Los Angeles.

Ordering meals per app

The “Connected Experience” by Airbus allows passengers to order pasta or chicken dishes using their mobile phones. The app can also confirm whether the cabin baggage will fit into the overhead locker avoiding unnecessary stress. Thanks to the networked cabin, the crew can regulate temperature and lighting and communicate with passengers. Diehl’s voice-controlled lavatory allows passengers to use the aircraft toilet without touching it, an attractive option both for passengers with restricted mobility and for the hygiene-conscious. From flushing the WC to operating the rubbish bin, all essential aspects of the lavatory can be controlled by voice commands in several languages. A passenger simply says: “Please turn on the tap.” The modular system means this innovation can easily be retrofitted. The third nominee, Latécoère, presented “LiFi Power” for transmitting data using light at this year’s Paris Air Show. Crew communication could soon be wireless, and data transmission speeds up to one hundred times faster bringing a brand new dimension to passenger entertainment and connectivity. Air France has already integrated this innovation in one of its cabins.

Successful Flio

The Hamburg-based Flio start-up won the very first Crystal Cabin Award in the new, special “Best Customer Journey Experience” category in 2018 with its Digital Airport Experience”. Flio’s app pools detailed flight and airport information, terminal overview maps, as well as direct booking options for lounges or transport at airports worldwide and is now used by Hamburg Airport. The app is aimed at passengers in all booking classes and first airlines have begun integrating Flio’s services into their own apps as well, the company said. The first ever Crystal Cabin Award was presented in 2007 by the Hamburg Aviation cluster.

The awards in September mark the start of the entry phase for the eight other categories: “Cabin Concepts”, “Cabin Systems”, “Greener Cabin, Health, Safety and Environment”, “Inflight Entertainment & Connectivity”, “Material and Components”, “Passenger Comfort Hardware”, “University” and “Visionary Concepts”. The awards will be presented on March 31, 2020 in Hamburg.
