HAW Hamburg opens new acoustic laboratory

Lab to develop concepts on fighting aircraft noise

Katharina Fegebank, Senator for Science, Research and Equality opened the new Acoustics Laboratory at HAW Hamburg on Monday (September 23, 2019) which has been built at a cost of EUR 3 million. Research into concepts for noise reduction in aircraft technology and vehicle construction will be done there.

Mobility and transport challenges

“Acoustics is a core part of our everyday lives and presents research with ever new challenges, especially in the areas of mobility and traffic said Fegebank “Interdisciplinary exchange there will be on e.g. concepts for noise reduction, modern, energy-efficient flying and forward-looking research that strengthens and networks Hamburg as a centre of innovation.”

Solutions for co-operating companies

The new laboratory completes the Research and Transfer Centre for Technical Acoustics and will become an interface between science and industry. Various university departments are developing acoustic solutions for companies co-operating in mobility and traffic and from medicine and entertainment. “We want to become a competent partner for the most pressing issues facing society in the region and especially acoustics and noise reduction for passengers and the environment,” said Prof. Micha Teuscher, President of the University of Applied Sciences (HAW).

Acoustics in entertainment, housing and transport

Acoustics is a competitive factor for technical products e.g. loudspeakers in entertainment. The value of a musical instrument is defined by its sound. Concert halls, residential buildings and offices are designed and built using acoustic measures to reduce noise pollution.
