U.S. author Stephen King is one of the most widely read and commercially successful writers of the 21st century. King made his breakthrough with “Carrie” in 1973 although it nearly proved a miss. The author had discarded the manuscript, and it was only thanks to his wife that he pursued the idea of the mobbed high school girl with supernatural abilities. The rights to the paperback eventually yielded a record USD 400,000 and prompted King to give up his bread-and-butter job as a teacher and become a full-time writer.
Jump to full-time stage actor
The graduates of the Stage School Hamburg now hope that their performance of Carrie – The Musical at the First Stage Theater this summer will pave the way to careers as full-time stage actors. The musical adaption of King’s debut pairs the tension of the novel with strong voices and rousing choreographies. The focus is on Carrie, 16, who is trying to cope with a deluded, devout mother. The teenager unleashes her supernatural powers when she is bullied at school and takes revenge on her tormentors. Maya Hakvoort plays Carrie’s mother Margaret, who does not shy away from trying to murder her teenage daughter. Hakvoort is a veritable musical star, said Thomas Gehle, Director of Stage School, and stressed: “We are very proud of this. Maya Hakvoort is the absolute number 1 in Austria.”
Hamburg – world’s third largest musical location

The boom commenced with Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber’s hit musical “Cats” in the mid 1980s and is still benefitting the city. Stage Entertainment’s four main musicals account for over EUR 600 million in external added value for the city, the company said. Hotels, restaurants, retail stores and other cultural institutions also cash in on the musicals.
Comeback for “Fame”
The actors will be doing their utmost to win over audiences from June 17-July 15, 2019. Last year’s summer production Fame – The Musical attracted a record 14,000 fans and will make a comeback in September in response to surging demand.
