The 830th Port of Hamburg Anniversary Celebrations get underway from May 10-12, 2019 in Hamburg. Visitors can look forward to a diverse programme with 300 vessels including Windjammers, cruise ships, restored museum ships and maritime service vehicles as they parade along the Elbe. The three-day celebrations will take place on the Landungsbrücken, in Speicherstadt, in HafenCity, at the Fischmarkt and at the Museumshafen Oevelgönne.
This year’s highlights include the Schlepperballett, the spectacular AIDA fireworks and the Elbphilharmonie’s “Concerts on Screen”. Recordings of performances in the Grand Hall will be shown free of charge on the forecourt of the Elbphilharmonie. The so-called “Energy Observer” is among brand new attractions. The sustainable catamaran is powered exclusively by renewable energy.
Hamburg’s new fire-fighting vessel
Europe’s most modern fire-fighting ship has been operating in the Port of Hamburg since early 2019. At a length of 44 metres, a width of 10 metres and space for up to 32 firefighters, the Brandirektor Westphal is the largest rescue boat in the history of Hamburg’s fire brigade. The ship can pump 120,000 litres of water per minute and spray water up to 110 meters high and 180 meters wide and can extinguish fires aboard the world’s largest container ships and cruise liners. The ship will be on display on Friday (May 10, 2019) evening from 8.30 pm.
