United Nations honours Hamburg's Weischer Media

Hanseatic family business becomes world's first "supporting partner"

Hamburg’s Weischer Media has become the world’s first corporate recipient of the U.N.’s “Supporting Partner” title, which is endowed on companies that demonstrate special commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The international goals have been drawn up as part of the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development. The award of “Supporting Partner” is part of the SDG Action Campaign.

U.N. partner of the first hour

Commenting on the award, Florian Weischer, Chairman of Weischer Media, said: “When we see how young pupils motivate an entire generation against climate change issues using the 'Fridays for Future” movement, companies of all sizes can no longer ignore their social responsibility. We all need to address these issues.” Marina Ponti, Director of the U.N. SDG Action Campaign, noted that Weischer Media has been a partner since the Sustainable Development Goals were passed in late 2015.

Global cinema campaigns and corporate responsibility

Werbe Weischer has held an annual global cinema campaign with the SAWA cinema marketing association on behalf of the U.N. to raise awareness of the 17 SDGs since 2015. The goals have been listed on the façade of Weischer Media’s headquarters in Hamburg since 2016. The family-owned company won the German Media Prize 2019 for its cross-media #SpreadYourGoals2030 campaign and has also set up a department for corporate responsibility.

Sustainability goals – a guideline for Hapag Lloyd

Hapag-Lloyd is also committed to the SDGs and first took account of them in its Sustainability Report 2019. The company’s activities contribute to six of 17 goals e.g. structural optimisation measures of the fleet have reduced fuel consumption and contributed to the goal of climate protection.

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

The 17 Sustainable Development Goals are the United Nation’s objectives and include securing sustainable development at the economic, social and ecological levels. They are based on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) developed in 2000, which are dedicated to reducing poverty, achieving gender equality and battling serious diseases. The SDGs took effect when the MDGs expired on January 1, 2016 and are valid until 2030. They are binding for all members of the U.N.
